John 10:27-28 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand".
Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God".When we hear a voice speak to us, we must immediately focus on what the voice is saying to be able to discern whose voice it is. There are three voices always speaking to us. God's voice, our voice and the devil's voice. As christians, we must be able to discern God's voice to live in accordance with His will for our lives.
We cannot listen to our voice because it stems from our fleshly desires, which is contrary to God's will. Also, it is always driven by our feelings and environment which will always change.
The devil's voice is no different as well because it either wants to kill, steal or destroy us. All the devil is interested in is to lead us into sin, and draw us away from God. So, how do we know when it's the devil's voice? it will not align with the word of God.
Today, we are going to focus on hearing God's voice. When we understand God's nature, we can easily discern when He speaks to us. So how then do we discern His voice?
Firstly, we know God is gentle, and loving. Therefore, His voice is always soft, calm, and peaceful. Secondly, His voice will always align with His word (the bible). God will never instruct you to do something contrary to His word because He is His word, and He never lies, therefore God's word will never lie. So when we are unsure if it's God speaking to us, we must go to the word of God to discern whether the voice aligns with it.
This is why it is very important for us to study the word because, we understand God's nature when we do, and we can quickly discern His voice.
I remember when I started trying to discern God's voice, I would always pray for confirmation concerning any voice that speaks to me, especially when the voice gives an instruction. As christians, we should always seek confirmation whenever we hear a voice or when someone gives us a word. Because when God speaks to us, He is always ready to confirm what He said.
An example, I heard the word "rest", like a voice was telling me I needed to rest. So I went deeper and discerned that it was God instructing me to rest in Him in that season of my life. Now, how was I able to discern what voice was speaking to me? I asked God for confirmation, I asked if He was the one speaking to me, He should confirm His word. Then, I got confirmation from sermons, and when I studied the bible I also got confirmation.
As we mature as christians, we become more familiar with God's voice, and we develop a "knowing" whenever He speaks to us. The knowing comes with peace, and certainty that it is God speaking to us.
The more you fellowship with God, the more you become familiar with the way He speaks to you especially, with the help of the Holy Spirit. We also become aware that God is present at all times, so we do not need a special occasion to communicate with Him. God is interested in everything we do and the more we invite Him to our daily activities, the more familiar we become with His voice. Personally, I love to communicate with God about everything, even down to picking an outfit, because I know He is interested in everything I do.
I pray for God's grace to build a personal relationship with Him, I pray that we will become sensitive to God's presence and we invite Him to all areas of our lives. I also pray for God's wisdom to be able to discern His voice and obey His instructions promptly, In Jesus Name. Amen.
